What is Gematria?

Gematria is an ancient Jewish system that assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters. This system has been used for centuries to uncover hidden meanings in texts, especially in the Torah. The Numerical Values of Hebrew Letters

In standard gematria, the numerical values are as follows:

  • Aleph (א) = 1
  • Bet (ב) = 2
  • Gimel (ג) = 3
  • …and so on, continuing up to Tav (ת) = 400.

In some systems, final letter forms (sofit letters) are given additional values:

  • Kaf Sofit (ך) = 500
  • Mem Sofit (ם) = 600
  • Nun Sofit (ן) = 700
  • Peh Sofit (ף) = 800
  • Tzadi Sofit (ץ) = 900

Types of Gematria

  • Standard Gematria: Adds up the standard numerical values of the letters.
  • Mispar Gadol: Includes the higher values for final letters.
  • Mispar Katan: Reduces values to single digits (e.g., 19 becomes 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1).
  • Atbash and Albam: Cipher-based methods that substitute letters to reveal hidden meanings.
